Announcement 2026 /r/CFB Rules Updates

The 2026 season is starting! As a reminder, you can find our rules here:

This is our biggest rules change in years!

Let's start with the one I know you're all excited about.

Standalone highlights posts are now allowed.

We're starting with a pretty liberal rule for what constitutes a highlight:

A highlight is a play or occurance at a game that has significant impact on the outcome of the game or that is, on its own, impressive.

You can read the full rules for highlights here but the highlights are:

  • A given play only gets one highlight thread. Any alternative angles should be posted as replies to the pinned top comment.
  • Highlights must to be hosted on an external, non-paywalled source.
  • Highlights must be titled in the format [Highlight] Visitor @/vs. Home - Neutral description of play eg:
    • Good: [Highlight] Michigan @ Ohio State - Jon Smith Breaks 3 Tackles for 69 Yard Touchdown
    • Bad: Ohio State vs TTUN - Jon "I am a god" Smith PWNS Three LOSERS for NICE TD

Gambling posts are now prohibited

Posts about gambling including opening odds, odds changes, prop bets, and unusual wagers are no longer allowed.

Gambling news that directly effects CFB, such as policy changes or gambling activity by CFB participants will still be allowed.

Users should post original sources

Users are expected to make a good-faith effort to find the original source of anything they post. If the primary purpose of a post is to quote, clip, cite, or repeat another source, you should post that original source instead. This keeps us aligned with the Reddiquette.

Recruiting threads are limited to 4* and 5* players

Unrated or lower-rated players should be posted to /r/CFBRecruiting.

Players entering the transfer portal

We haven't decided what we're going to do with these posts yet. Based on last year we still have some time to decide. We will defintely post an update once we've made a decision.

More minor rules changes:

  • Tweet titles An exception has been added to the current rule. If a tweet primarily consists of media, most notably uniform reviews, a neutral title describing the content of the tweet is allowed.
  • News about committed recruits prior to enrollment is only allowed if it affects the player's enrollment or eligibility. This is a clarification of the existing rule.
  • Editorialized Posts: Links should be posted on their own. If you wish to add commentary or context, do so in the comment section. OpenGraph titles (Reddit's title suggestions) are allowed. This is a clarification of the existing rule.
  • Other phrasing clarifications: A number of other rules had their phrasing changed to be more clear. None of these resulted in policy changes.

Weekly Threads

Also note that our in-season weekly threads are coming back online for the season. This means that posts that were allowed during the offseason (realignment, etc.) will now be removed as reposts, and are now a great fit as top-level comments in their respective threads.

The /r/CFB team always works to meet the evolving needs of the community. Let us know any feedback you have in the comments!

Discussion [@NotTheExpertYT] I was a camera operator for Auburn and worked many college football games for ESPN & SEC network. The Big Ten is lying to you and fabricated evidence for Michigan to have an extra play at the end of the game against Western Michigan. The stadium clock is the standard. Not whatever

Discussion The Big Ten CANNOT claim any clock discrepancies as the Game Clock was reset to 9 seconds before the final play in Western Michigan-Michigan debacle

4.1k Upvotes

The Big 10 is likely going to try explain that there’s a difference between the “game clock” and the time displayed in the stadium. HOWEVER, that argument gets thrown out once the officials had the game clock operator reset the game clock to 9 seconds. Meaning the “game clock” and the time displayed in the stadium were synchronized before the final play. When the clock hit 0 the game was over.

Analysis [@statholesports] I found 175 college football field storms since 2019. No team had a sadder storm field than Michigan (-27.5) last night and Michigan holds two of the three saddest field storms.

Casual College Football is Corrupt

After the entire CFB watching country saw what Michigan did to Western Michigan, the question is over. Sports betting and big money determine the outcome of the games, and legitimate contest is dead. That was a disgrace, and there needs to be an investigation.

Michigan lost and Western got screwed. The whole country saw it. Now the excuses come in.

Nothing will happen, of course. And I'll passibly watch when I'm bored, but the outcome is pre-determined. What a disgrace. I feel so bad for the Western Michigan kids who won the game at the Big Cheat.

Analysis [Thamel] That extra second will be the most scrutinized second in college football this weekend. What a stunning scene in Ann Arbor.

Discussion If I'm Western Michigan I am putting that as a win on my website

5.8k Upvotes

I'm claiming that as a win and if the NCAA says I have to take it down, I'm suing them into oblivion.

You know they would back down, because they are impotent.

Discussion Western Michigan lost more than a game tonight.

3.1k Upvotes

This was going to be a historic night for their university and community. This would be played on highlight reels, recruiting pitches, donor revitalizations. Undoubtedly the greatest win in their history, spanning over 120 years.

Players would have remembered this for the rest of their lives, discussing it at reunions 30, 40, 50 years from now.

All gone.

G6 teams struggle enough as it is, we cannot continue to suck the life out of this sport. This is just sickening in so many layers.

I can't think of anyone else who could engineer such a spectacular finish. Talk about down to the wire!

Should they just hand him the trophy now?

"Stoppage time, also referred to as injury time or added time, is an additional period added to the end of each half. Its purpose is to compensate for time lost during the game due to stoppages such as injuries, substitutions, or other delays."
