Eh, the guy was first the governour of Lagos in 1999. He then was able to make it so that his cronies kept in power till today, which no other state governour in Nigeria has managed.

Yeah, I have also met people from Lagos. One was a photographer visiting Lagos in Portugal to do a project. Lagos Nigeria is a capital with about 20million people, Lagos Portugal is about 50.000, a huge difference but he wanted to try to find the similarities as well. :)
And yeah, he told about how stressful his own city was, and that he had to constantly watch out for thiefs while wearing his camera.

You kinda get used to it and you are just annoyed. I used to work in sales and I cold called people because I was desperate and needed money. My first call took me 40 minutes to make because I was panicking. They didn't pick up. Eventually I made more calls and I got called a filthy piece of shit and told to k1ll myself. You eventually get over it like exposure therapy. She is chill I'm sure this isn't her first rodeo and she is smiling and just living. That's some guts and confidence

I had a cold caller call work once and i answered the phone with my usual "Company Name. How can I help you?" and she said something like "I'm from _____. Are you going to tell me to get a real job or are you going to let me explain what we do?". I wanted to hang up on her immediately, what an odd thing to say to someone you're trying to sell things to. I still wonder if she started every call like that or if she was just having a particularly bad day.

Picture this: From 2007-2014: I lived in the country. Had to sleep in the basement so I wouldn’t wake my wife or kids. Wake up at 5am. Shower in a basement bathroom full of spiders, even in winter. Leave the house on a dark & bitterly cold Canadian prairie morning. Even the sun was like “It’s too fucking early to get up dude, just give me another hour!” Pick up my carpool coworker and her kid at 5:45am down her desolate country farm road. Drop the kid off at daycare in an another small town. Drive into the city. Park. Walk 10 minutes to our building. Get to my cubicle. Pick up the phone at 7am on the dot and start calling people, legally, as I worked collections. I still get PTSD if I hear the phone alarm I used to wake up. Fuck. That.

Friend of mine is traveling the world in a campervan with kids. They went from the Middle East to Africa recently and now they have to deal with constant begging for money and food. They are the most laid-back and easy people in the world and they get absolutely overwhelmed by the intensity of it all.

My husband lived in Tanzania for 6 months when he was in his 20s. He said the children in the town he was staying in would chase him every day & shout things like "buy me candy! But my mother a house! buy me a car!" And on more than one occasion he had men offering him their daughters for marriage because they assumed white=wealthy.
I don't think I could function in that world.

The saddest thing is that compared to some parts of the world I am unfathomably wealthy. I live in a fairly HCOL area so my $80k a year makes me comfortable, but I’m not swimming in money. But huge swaths of the world are getting by on $2-5k a year so to them I am insanely rich. Especially if I was there for tourism and not working locally.

I’ll go wander into a dark alley in the roughest area I can find in my city, with expensive camera, and openly vlog knowing it notorious that people of my sex doing such get robbed, raped and beaten to the point of death.
I, knowing the facts and with full intent to deliberately expose myself to such environment, clearly filming for “content”, totally could not be doing it to be perceived as a victim when I at least get harassed. Of course not.

Putting yourself in a dangerous position does not mean that you are to blame for the crime. It's a bad idea, but you'd absolutely still be a victim even if it was obvious and avoidable, and it would not mean that you deserved it.

“Blame” is a very loaded term.
If I jump into a bullfighting ring - completely untrained and unprepared - and get gored, am I to blame? I’m a victim, sure. The bull is technically at fault, I guess. Blame the bull if you feel the need to. But I still bear some responsibility for putting myself in harms way. I made bad decisions and bore the consequences. I’m at least partially at fault.
I understand that the anti-“victim blaming” stance is the pendulum swinging away from the previous status quo, and it’s obviously incredibly harmful to blame victims. That being said, it’s probably more harmful and dangerous to tell people that they can put themselves in dangerous positions and it’s never their fault. It’s always the rest of the world to blame when something bad happens, when they could easily have avoided that harm.
Ultimately, people need to take responsibility for their own safety.

There is no nationality that has a monopoly on dickheads, but in some countries the worst of the worst are legitimately dangerous. India has one of the worst rates of SA in the world. Ideally anybody should be able to go anywhere without fear, but we don’t live in an ideal world. It’s strange to think someone would go somewhere TO get harassed for content, but the internet is a strange place.

Just for perspective, people leave Nigeria and come to South Africa to escape. I worked with Asylum seekers for a while in my pervious job. These people are scared to go back, they take the abuse of the locals, and trust me, the locals hate them. Then there's the fact the South Africa is in the top of the list of most dangerous places to live in.
My point, this is very dangerous and especially for a woman. It's an unfortunate reality but it is true. This does not mean they are alla bunch of monsters. But there are people there that will do unthinkable things to her without a second thought, the same goes for South Africa.
Travel, vitst these places, but travel smart.
My best friend from high school was from Nigeria. Such a great guy, we bonded of our similar personalities. But he had to move close to the end of high school and we lost touch. He hated Nigeria, he legally got a citizenship to South Africa when his mom married a South African man.
Anyway. Try spread love, not hate, love you all.

Nigeria is a hell hole. Last time I was there, it was for a total of 2 weeks. I swear I only got like 18 hours of sleep. There was so much damn noise, and people randomly yelling or some kind of party or dance event on every corner. So many people there are lways trying to get money from others. Even the kids are trying to hustle money from others.

There's so much wrong information on this post. She's not a travle blogger she's a DJ who plays afrobeat/afro house. She's been in Nigeria for quite a bit of time (as well as visiting other African countries)and is familiar, comfortable and like the culture. Admittedly they were doing too much but she knows what it's like out there and clearly knows how to handle her self. Of course the racists cone out the woodwork, take it out of context and make it seem worse than it is.

How about explaining how this is "out of context" and what would be "in context"? Instead of claiming everyone is racist and doesn't have any idea because no one else ever travels in this world.
If this, according to you, is happening to someone who is familiar with the country and the culture and is yet being harassed like that, I don't even want to imagine what happens to an actual (naive) tourist.
I think this is very well showing what you've to expect and lines up with experiences people have in Africa and middle east. I've family members myself who went on vacation to Morocco. They did not feel save traveling outside of tourist / guarded locations by the police/security (of which some are just as dangerous).
Stop pretending this isn't bad or "seems to have been a little worse than usual" holy moly you are actually putting people in danger spreading that info.

When I got a job downtown I quickly learned not to carry around food in my hand for exactly this reason.

Although as someone who grew up on the other side of Africa, I can confirm the behaviour is the same - albeit the people are a lot poorer (also visibly poorer). Comparatively, these locals look much more decently dressed and well fed.
