TV & Movies 🎬 Which "iconic duo" were you shocked to find out didn't actually like each other/were nothing more than coworkers?

Post image

To some, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters (2003-2016) make up one of the most famous double-acts in film and/or television, with Savage being optimistic and Hyneman being pragmatic. But despite being entertaining for you and I, Adam states that he and Jamie butted heads pretty often because of their different personalities. And looking back at some of the episodes, I can really see how Jamie wants Adam to show a little maturity, while Adam wants Jamie to lighten up a little. While it is disheartening, it is the way it is.

Which other duos of characters and hosts was it hard to learn that some people just don't get along despite how well they work together onscreen?

On Jamie and Adam, while they didn’t get along personally as friends, they were the image of professionalism in creative industries and getting on with it, and often working to each others strengths.

At a time when the American Chopper boys were throwing chairs at each other it was a beacon of reasonability.

I've watched Adam's YouTube channel (Tested) for years now. It comes up regularly on his q&a videos and he always emphasizes this. Based on what he's said, you're exactly right: they were both self aware that their personalities were polar opposite, but knew that was going to work in their favor for the show. Jamie was the one who invited Adam specifically to shoot the pilot (maybe audition, I can't recall the specifics) because Jamie knew he needed someone with that bubbly charisma for the entertainment aspect.

The show worked because even though they were not friends outside of the show, they respected each other's work and always had the same goal.

I think everyone should learn it's okay not to force a friendship with someone just because you work with them.

u/nat5an 5h ago

Yeah this is the story I’ve heard as well. The show was initially being developed with Jamie, he knew (quite correctly) that he didn’t have the right personality and energy to carry the show on its own and specifically pulled in Adam to be, well, Adam. Definitely the right call, and I have plenty of coworkers in my own job that I work together really well with, but we don’t hang out together outside of work. I think it’s a testament to how effective their on-screen pairing was that people developed a parasocial relationship with them and were actively disappointed to find out they weren’t hanging out all the time off screen.

131

u/mere_iguana 3h ago

Adam has also said that while they didn't really mesh as friends, Jamie was EXCELLENT to work with, and he still says that his favorite part of MB was always when he and Jamie worked together to solve problems. They rarely had disagreements or ego battles and were both open to each others' ideas.

Good observation.

Jamie is an excellent straight man, but you can’t carry a show with just dry humor.

Yeah people have really overblown it to some sort of hatred. No, they got along professionally and if they hated each other, I doubt the show would have lasted

We all have people we work with just fine without wanting to hang out with them later

u/According_Bridge_746 6h ago

Remember Adam and Jamie worked together for years before myth busters . Jamie being Adams boss .

349

u/Diligent-Ad4777 6h ago

And it was Jamie who suggested Adam as a cohost I believe as he knew him alone would be too dour. Originally it was only gonna be him I seem to recall.

242

u/Kaiser_Cave 5h ago

Adam savage has addressed this on his YouTube channel Tested. They’ve never sat down and had a meal together as friends but they are colleagues through and through. I believe he has said they still talk when the need arises but they aren’t calling asking about the wife and kids.

Yeah they didnt hate one another. They were co workers and you can see in the show there are moments the clearly made eachother laugh or having fun together. Its just "work friends" though. They aren't besties outside of work.

63

u/Haunting_Bat_4787 5h ago

Most of my coworkers I wouldn’t hang out with outside of work, but at work, we play to each others strengths and it makes everything during the work day go super smooth. I can joke around and have fun with them and them with me, but outside of work we just don’t have any reason to hang out or try and force some kind of friendship.

Vivian Vance and William Frawley who played Fred and Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy. I was surprised to find out they hated each other.

831

u/Lo452 6h ago

IIRC, he was a drunk, and Vivian was a little miffed that she was styled (makeup, hair, and costume) to be older and frumpy on the show. He used to poke that sore spot to get a rise out of her.

367

u/SerenityN00w 5h ago

Vivian did resent the fact that she was styled that way, and that she was married to a man old enough to be her father.

To be fair, that's the way the Ethel Mertz character was written. When Lucy first met Vivian, she was very skeptical. Vivian assured her that "I photographed dumpy." Desi Arnaz has discovered Vance doing a play and became convinced that she was perfect for the role. Despite the age difference between the couple, he was right. Desi assured Lucy that Vivian could play the role as needed.

Yeah and I heard their feud started with a comment Vivian made about William being old and she didn't like he was playing her husband. I heard their feud carried on even after I Love Lucy ended, I read an article that said he got the children on his show My Three Sons to help pull pranks on Vivian who was next door filming The Lucy Show.

I Love Lucy producer Jess Oppenheimer once said in 1986 "We had a generous share of ongoing feuds simmering during I Love Lucy but not a hint of it is to be seen on the screen. Actors might be eccentric, but they’re not crazy.”

The term "hate" might be a little overblown, but no, Bill and Vivian didn't like each other.

Vivian Vance was just a ittle older than Lucy. She wasn't wild about playing the role of a frumpy housewife and couldn't believe she had to be married on-screen to a man 25 years older than her. She complained that Frawley should have been playing her father. Frawley, who was cantankerous to begin with, found out and resented her for it.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz saw their marriage fall apart during the 1950's. They last time they played the Ricardos was in spring of 1960. They has already privately separated. Things were so strained that they only spoke through intermediaries during filming. "Would you tell Ms. Ball to move here?" A guest star recalled that Lucy continously burst into tears. It was painful to be around.

I once met a guy who directed an episode of L&C. He said they were setting up a shot of her coming out of the elevator. He was looking at the monitor and said "Uh, Teri, you're just about a step out of frame," and she just snapped back "So move the fucking camera." Nobody knows for sure. There are some reports that he bullied her on set and some that say it was just personality differences and not bullying. Regardless, the last season ends super abruptly and you can tell in some places that the two of them filmed separately, they’re rarely together in frame.

419

u/Fire_Bucket 7h ago

I remember hearing from someone in Katic's camp, that I think Katic has since gone on to deny, that he was quite nasty and difficult to work with, especially after their supposed dating and subsequent break up,

But then half the cast and crew either fully followed him over, or at least worked with him again, on The Rookie, which made me think that he can't have been that bad to work with.

It's likely just a bad breakup, with both of them feeling aggrieved, combined with different working styles and on a difficult job with long hours and a lot of close contact with each other. Both seem happy and busy with other stuff now.

354

u/Coneskater 7h ago

There needs to be a meta podcast that explains what happened there.

238

u/HungrySeaShark 5h ago

I mean there was a ton of coverage at the time, even on Reply All itself.

PJ Vogt and Sruthi Pinnamaneni were accused by their colleagues of trying to sabotage union efforts within Gimlet. They were specifically called out in that moment because Sruthi was the one producing (and I think hosting if I recall correctly?) the Bon Appetit mini-series. Her colleagues said this was a conflict of interest because she and PJ had been creating basically the same atmosphere at Gimlet that they were spotlighting at Bon Appetit.

The two of them voluntarily stepped away from the show, and Alex Goldman tried to get it running again with a rotating cast of others from Gimlet, but it was never the same. Now PJ and Sruthi do their own show Search Engine and Alex Goldman does his own show Hyperfixed.

In an old interview they summed it up as "Loved Radar, hated Burgoff"

36

u/IsaRat8989 4h ago

It wasn't so much hate, but he was at times very difficult to work with. He was going through a lot personally while filming mash, among them a divorce, but the cast have had several reunions where he has been included.

He also strikes me as a socially awkward person from interviews and that could absolutely clash with the extremely outgoing co-actors, example; when the cast was gathered for the reading of Henry's final episode he apariantly refused to open the envelope with the scrips and claimed it was pictures of dead babies. Was it a bad joke, overreaction or stress? Who knows.

531

u/TheCynicEpicurean 5h ago

Yeah, the imbalance of their contributions always struck me. Sure, different people needed different things from them, but the amount of time spent on Karamo organising a bowling alley trip with the mom vs Bobby and team turning an entire house inside out was odd.

321

u/Interesting_Tea5715 5h ago

Totally agree. Also Antoni would show them how to cook a very simple dish and that was his whole contribution.

Antoni and Karamo always felt like they did the least.

95

u/TheCynicEpicurean 5h ago

I have a soft spot for Antoni because he seemed to get through to people more than Karamo did when he just bonded over food, but yeah, he was probably the second least involved. Him, Tan and JVN were the core friends group though I think.

Bea Arthur and Betty White on The Golden Girls

771

u/ZealousidealGroup559 9h ago

Apparently Betty merrily played to the studio audience and Bea thought this was juvenile. She was quite a serious person.

893

u/sittingpretty24 8h ago

Exactly. What I’ve read about it is that Betty liked to engage the audience and Bea wanted to focus on finishing the scene. Like if there was an error or mistake in the scene and they cut, Betty would start to talk to the audience and joke about what went wrong, etc. Bea didn’t do that.

A lot of these mismatches are like that; a difference in approach in how they work. It’s usually not anything more than that.

when estelle getty was suffering from early lewy body dementia combined with severe stage fright/performance anxiety and mess up her lines, betty white would make jokes about it to the studio audience. she would mime that estelle had been drinking, etc.

people who were there seemed pretty split about it, and at least one person said they changed their opinion about it over time. rue mclanahan and bea arthur thought she was being incredibly unkind to estelle. stan zimmerman (writer) thought so at the time, but later said he'd come to believe betty was drawing attention away from estelle's memory problems as a sort of kindness.

There is an interview with the two of them I’ve seen where the interviewer (a guy, I can’t remember who) is talking down to Betty. Bea jumps in and eats him up.

I was surprised to find out Ed O'Neill and Amanda Bearse from Married with Children didn't get along in real life. Obviously their characters rarely got along but the frenemy chemistry between the two was huge and seemed to develop as the series went on. I always assumed these two actors must have had so much fun filming these scenes with each other because of how great their scenes together were. Kind of a bummer

144

u/ghettoblaster78 5h ago

He made a joke about who gets to wear the tie, when she announced she was getting married, and it hurt her feelings.

I remember reading about this and how he apologized to her afterwards. He really felt bad about it. I mean, the show, from what I remember, had plenty of gay jokes in it—none were outright mean, but played more into the stereotypical. I think he just made a bad joke, not meant to actually be mean and it backfired and hurt her. But, I believe they really just didn’t get on because of their respective personalities. She seemed like she was more interested in being behind the camera rather than in front of it.

He also seems to be well-liked by his other gay co-stars and doesn’t have a history of spouting homophobic comments.

Lastly, lots of people laughed at the concept of gay marriage back then—even those who now completely support and even embrace it. As a gay man, I’ve heard that same stupid joke from other gay people more than from straight people (which one of you is wearing the dress, ha ha), so I’m willing to bet he was just trying to be funny and failed.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman on Sherlock (2010)

409

u/theburgerbitesback Be smart, Robert. 8h ago

I had so much fun watching the fans implode over Cumberbatch's wedding.

Everyone was convinced that Freeman would be his best man, to the point where it was announced as fact in some tabloid articles, only for it to come out later that Freeman didn't even attend at all.

198

u/The_Grand_Briddock 4h ago

This was also the peak Superwholock era. When fans went gaga for those shows online.

Matt Smith, Arthur Darvill & Karen Gillan were all close. Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki were close. So naturally Bndct Cmbrbtch and Martin Freeman would also be that close.

No, they were just coworkers.

It's wild how much that one seems to have been blown out of proportion.

By all accounts, they don't hate each other, they just aren't friends. They're co-workers who are happy to work together and respect each other, but once the cameras cut, they aren't hanging out. They're going home and not meeting out of production. They've both said they'd be open to doing more Sherlock down the line if Steven came up with something, there doesn't seem to be any bad blood between them. They just aren't buddy buddy and have no reason to talk unless they're working on something together.

But to the fandom, who shipped the characters to death and attached that to the actors, they made up this elaborate mental image about how Benedict and Martin were soul mate besties on and off screen. So hearing that they're not really friends at all was devastating and it some how twisted into them hating each other (no doubt by some exaggerated tabloid headlines). I think the fandom got too used to stuff like Supernatural where they are very close off screen that when they find out actors sometimes just consider each other colleagues it ruins it for them. Very parasocial group the SuperWhoLock guys.

232

u/Xentonian 8h ago

It's very much the same for OP's example: Adam and Jamie had a functional professional relationship and Adam respected, in his words, the hell out of Jamie.

It's just that they had strongly different personalities and aren't each other's preferred type of person with whom they would "hang out" outside of work.

86

u/hash-slingin-slasha 7h ago

Woah I was gonna write this lol

It’s not like Jamie hated everyone. Dude just went to work, had fun, and left. No beers after work or anything. Nothing wrong with that.

Adam is just extroverted and Jamie isn’t

The bad blood was from Red Dawn. During their chemistry screen test for Dirty Dancing Swayze pulled her aside to apologize for their previous friction. She recalled that he told her, "I love you, I love you and I'm so sorry," acknowledging that he knew she was hesitant to work with him again because of his past macho behavior and on-set pranks. He then assured her, "We could kill it—we could kill it if we did this," which helped convince her to take the role. There were some frustrations on set but nothing major.

Patrick: “One thing that really worked beautifully was that it was really a teaching situation. I really had been a dancer my entire life. Jennifer had a great deal of natural talent, but needed to be nourished. So I think Jennifer was at that time, and still, one of the most gifted actresses around in terms of her ability to be present, in the moment, right now. And I think that’s what made Baby and her character really, really special.”

Jennifer: in her memoir, Out of the Corner, she wrote about their many rifts, and how if she could, she would apologize to Swayze, "I would say, 'I'm so sorry that I couldn't just appreciate and luxuriate in who you were, instead of me wishing you were more like what I wanted you to be..."

He did gave frustration with her as they filmed the Hungry Eyes moves . When Johnny traces Baby's arm in a close-up shot, and she keeps laughing and breaking out of the movement, that was Grey's genuine reaction, and Swayze's real frustration bled through. His eye rolls and irritation were real. The scene took about 20 takes and they kept it in because it added to the tension between the characters.

They were both to blame there.

He was single and very recently a very successful bar tender and was just continuing that kind of raucous late night living, shooting his mouth off smart ass kind of New York lifestyle except now he was in LA and in a totally different industry.

Meanwhile she was never shy about being contemptuous of a co-star.

In the book, Jennette is very open and honest about the fact that she was jealous of Ariana. I didn't get the sense that they dislike eachother, more than Ariana was getting more opportunities, more praise etc. and that bothered Jennette. But she didn't appear to have an issue with Ariana as a person. Imo

612

u/Space_Hunzo 6h ago

I think Jeanette has been pretty self aware and gracious about Ariana, I never really saw it as a feud or anything. They were both really young and Grande had a very strong support network around her, of course Jeanette would resent that and find it hard to see

Bradley Whitford and Rob Lowe apparently cannot stand each other, likely because Brad is super liberal in real life and Rob just played a liberal on tv.

140

u/Han_Burgandy 5h ago

Probably didn’t help that IIRC, Lowe (Sam) was poised to be the star of the ensemble but fans & Sorkin’s writing gravitated towards Whitford and JOSH took on more/better storylines.
Plus, Sheen’s Bartlett also ended up becoming the focal point of the show, which sounds like wasn’t planned at first.

In later years, they both definitely came to reflect more on how engineered the feud was and how they'd been manipulated by the studio execs to turn on each other.

The way Doherty spoke about it in later years had a lot of self awareness and grace, she was very intelligent and perceptive. Super interesting to hear her talking about her experiences in the industry back then and how not just she but all the young female talent was treated.

Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder did many comedies together, including these three and Silver Streak (1976), but off-screen (even in the set when the cameras were not filming) they were not close at all, did not hang out together and had very different personalities and lifestyles

551

u/Iron_Sight_Mark 9h ago

That sounds like they were both just professional.

166

u/Coffee_pecking_order 7h ago

That's honestly what most of these are. Strictly professional relationships. People want on screen friends to be off screen friends and that's just not realistic. I've gotten alone fine with coworkers, and had perfect working relationships.

But by no means would I call them friends.

Wilder deliberately kept some distance. Gene said they were so good together professionally that he didn’t necessarily want to risk damaging that relationship by becoming close friends privately. Gene also said Pryor “traveled in his own circle.”

Basically, they could count on one hand the number of times they saw each other outside work.

I get it. Gene was a Jewish dad trying to get his kids to Hebrew school on time. And Richard was in a cocaine-fueled orgy on the same Sunday morning.

Work ≠ real life.

What is very interesting to me is that Jamie was originally offered to be the one main host of the show and it was Jamie who suggested adding Adam as he felt Adam was more gregarious and Jamie thought he was too uninteresting to host the show by himself. Jamie understood that Adam could bring something valuable to the show. And Adam did - he added a lot of wonder and humor to the show.

Jaime and Adam have mutual respect for each other and understand that the other person is very good as what they do. But they are very different personality types. They don’t hate each other - they worked together before Mythbusters but they are not best friends.
