This is why he was voted in. The right has become so "anti-elitist" and "apolitical" that they put the most incompetent people in charge of a government they want to see dismantled, and corporations are more than happy to spend a pittance to help save themselves tens of millions in regulations and then fight over the vacuum of power left behind when government services shut down.

u/FireflyBSc 13h ago
As a Canadian, absolutely fucking not. We’ve always been proud of our conduct, and I would rather be a proud sucker than an isolationist worm that regrets doing the right thing. We joined both World wars first, fighting far longer with more of our soldiers being volunteers and less of them coming home. We didn’t follow them into wars like Vietnam and the invasion of Iraq, but we were there when they were attacked. And we take the high road now. We didn’t start this, we tried to negotiate, we were clear about why we cannot capitulate. And we keep our heads high, for the great things we continue to do rather than this kind of petty shit. That’s why we have so many allies and can stand up for ourselves, because even if our neighbour can’t appreciate us, everyone else knows that we are a good neighbour regardless.

In the words of JD Vance, it's the 25th celebration of 9/11.
I'm actually not serious with that, 9/11 was a tragedy and the people in those towers didn't deserve to die. But Canada should have shipped all the American groundees straight back across the border and refused to get involved in Afghanistan. Agreed. We helped because it was the right thing to do. And that’s the part worth remembering. Canada’s kindness wasn’t transactional. The current treatment of Canada is the contrast I'm making. After all that history of friendship, cooperation and standing beside the United States when it needed us, America’s response has increasingly been tariffs, insults, threats and treating its closest ally like an enemy.

A really good friend of mine was an air traffic controller in Iqaluit on 9/11. He said he started work at 9am and brought a sub for lunch, he had it on the side of his keyboard. He said he remembers sitting down to work, and then looking at the sub and saying…huh, I think I should I eat - and it was noon the next day.
That was the mid Arctic, not usually a busy air space. But that’s how busy he was diverting aircraft. Time stood still.

70% of America's citizens remember and when all is said and done they hold all the power. Government just holds the illusion of power but it could collapse within a one week if ever citizens decided to revolt.
I am Canadian, my father is American and his side of the family still lives in Pennsylvania. Even Canada has its idiots and I do believe if our population was 350 million we would have just as many morons as America. Canada is aiming to build its population from 40 million to 100 million in the next 70 years. Probably will make it to 60 or 70 million rather. One day our country will be very powerful even if it takes another few hundred years, let's hope our country's are still allies by then.
All I know as a Canadian is we have done a lot for America despite being a much weaker country, there are so many things modern North Americans don't remember from our past. One other small example is when Pearl Harbor was bombed. In history lessons, my cousin told me in school depictions of retaliation were done solely via the Americans, but Canada played a big part as well. The moment Japan declared war on America by bombing that Harbor Canada declared war against Japan and invaded some of Japans territories. A lot of Canadian soldiers were captured and held as prisoners of war for years. There have been many Hollywood films about WW2 and the attack on Pearl Harbor, I don't know ANY of them that depict Canada having Americas back simply because we are neighbors.

u/iowndat 19h ago
If it matters, my impression of Canada has been that they’re always the first to help us. If we tell them our border is kinda weak, they’re on it. If we have fires or floods, they’re sending people and planes to help. If I had to choose our most important ally, it would be Canada.
That is why I have been shocked by Trump starting shit with Canada. There’s literally nothing to be mad about- he had to make shit up!
I think he’s probably manipulating the stock market this way, like he does. Or maybe it’s all because Melania was drooling over Justin Trudeau.

There was a couple that met and later married after their flight London to Houston flight was diverted to Newfoundland.

Gander, NFLD. That city deserves respect, they had no pre plan and just welcomed thousands of americans needing help that were suddenly stranded. And to think that same country is a gigantic piece of shit now and threatening to annex canada. What a world they think they live in.

The Dutch send Canada 20,000 tulips every year since WW2 for sheltering members of their royal family.
The Americans start some moronic trade war that hurts their own citizens as thanks for NORAD, housing citizens in Newfoundland on 9/11, sending countless human aid and help from everything from monumental disasters like Katrina to yearly forest fires, and sent military in to dozens of regions to support the US through the Cold War.
That’s the greatest difference in human and global political relations.
Others approach it with grace, dignity, humility, appreciation, and respect.
The US however chose a felonious pedophile twice to lead them and enables his extraordinary thin-skinned tantrums and tear apart the fabric of what America always stood for.
Relations may improve over time and with rational administrations in the future, but I highly doubt Canada ever trusts the US to the same degree they did int the past ever again l, regardless of whoever is in power next.
Reap what you sow.

Pretty sure the lake isn't even named after Ontario Canada. It's named after the literal indigenous people who lived there.

Yes, many Americans have short memories. It should be pointed out that the Canadian Embassy in Tehran hid 5 or six of our diplomats during the hostage takeover. Gave them fake Canadian credentials and got them out of the country.

There is a play called Come From Away about a small town in Newfoundland hosting people that were diverted on 9/11. Would recommend if it comes to your city. Very cool story.

Fast forward 25 years and the current administration is treating our very generous neighbors like trash. So embarrassing for US right now.

u/TheAsianTroll 11h ago
On the flip side: in response to 9/11, two-time US President Donald J. Trump, famous for his involvement in both the creation and the public restriction of the Epstein files, bragged about having the tallest building in NYC after the planes hit. This was also factually false, as he didnt even have the tallest building on that block, but it shows what kind of man my country elected.

The US has failed it's neighbors and (former) allies. And before we lay the blame at Trump, he is only possible because 1/3 of the country voted for him, and another 1/3 of the country decided none of it matters.

Quit blaming it on the guy in charge and instead blame it on the systemic rot within your country, your countrymen have been propagrandized to the point of literal insanity and the left leaning do nothing to put out the fire, to legislate away the ability to call propsganda entertainment networks "news", literally anything. This is not a one man problem, this is a country in rot and decay eating itself. Take to the fucking streets and take your country back

Seriously, so fucking many people keep repeating the "Grr it's all that Donald Trump's fault!" when he's a symptom at best.
Man is barely conscious most of the time, the Republican party are the ones "letting him" do all this shit.
People keep acting like once he dies everything is fixed, just like they acted like him getting voted out fixed everything. It didn't. A third to half our fucking country want this, still, and are completely divorced from reality.

Sadly, the relationship between Canada and the US is most likely never going to be where it once was. Canada already is making international deals, trade and more with other countries than the US, ones that Canada is unlikely to break just to remake them with the US, and Canadians, even right now, are ignoring US products just to get Canadian or international products

The relationships the US had with every country has been permanently damaged by this orange pedophile. Any reasonable country is going to look at and think: if they have so many stupid people that they reelected this criminal, it's only a matter of time before it happens again..... why trust the US ever again?

On the northeast tip of North America, on an island called Newfoundland, there's an airport.
It used to be one of the biggest airports in the world, and next to it is a town called Gander.

You truly are our greatest ally and not all of us are blind to that. I vote every time I can to vote out the cancer. I really hope our relations change and we can recoup our failures to you guys.

The problem is, the current US government has a very short term memory (just look at trumps “loyalty” to his own aides over the years).
One minute we’re sending Canadians south to put out fires, the next Trump is threatening sanctions against Canada for ours.

Newfoundland specifically took a lot of people into their homes, which is way more impressive because of the size of the population.

Yeah my parents housed a guy from Chicago. He bought us presents which was really nice and I remember I accidentally took his toothbrush to a sleep over with a friend.
He ended up sending Christmas cards for a while after, then lost touch.
