Mental illness

1.1k

u/Chubuwee 10h ago

Are there higher rates of body dysmorphia now in men than before? For the longest it was mainly women fucking themselves up with surgery but now the main are playing at higher numbers

543

u/Jeramy_Jones 10h ago

Social media (and Hollywood) are doing it to everyone.

Beauty standards were always unrealistic, but now they’re acutely un-real. Filters, AI and plastic surgery have got people believing some crazy shit about what an attractive human being looks like.

173

u/Burton_trout 5h ago

I workout a lot, just to keep in shape not as one of those incel looks maxxer types. But i was teaching my younger nephew how to work out safely & he said he wants that "marvel physique", so I had to explain that its all steroids & fake. You cannot look like that just from working out, not if you have a life to live anyway. He looked at me like I was bullshitting so I had to show him evidence & explain you do not need to look like a Greek God to be fit or find a partner, just being toned and in good shape will help to set you apart from most other people in the dating world & in daily life. Its disgusting really the damage its doing to their sense of identity that they feel they have to meet these impossible standards.

60

u/Dude_Dillligence 4h ago

"The Man whose Arms Exploded" might be a good teaching example here.

19

u/TouristOwn2412 3h ago

I think they need to understand that steroid use and abuse can be much more subtle and is far more widespread than the guy whose arms exploded.

9

u/Due_Aside4863 3h ago

True, but people can grasp the tragedy of one person much more quickly and at a deeper level than they can for a group of people.

It’s why when charity ads have been tested, donations were highest when one needy child was shown, the larger the number of kids shown, the lower the donations.

They’re also only focusing on the superficial. Not focusing on being creative or witty or humorous. There are many ways to live a life and being an obsessive gym junkie is only one of them and unbeknownst to them not even the healthiest one. I actually go to the gym and try to eat right but I stay away from the social media bullshit or anyone who tells me I’m not good enough and need to be taking anything else other than eating healthily most of the time. I also want other things in my life. I thought the gym would be the most fulfilling thing and it’s great but it’s just to keep my mind and body in check so I can do other things like write, sing, create, take care of my loved ones.

Either way you're paying for attention.

56

u/Boobookittyfhk 5h ago

The problem is these kids are filling themselves up with hormone injections. Clavicular actually admitted that he is impotent at the age of 20 because of the steroids.

I thought the whole point of this was to be “alpha” male and to get girls… but now they’re impotent? I don’t get it.

34

u/Uhstrology 5h ago

Yeah thats tbeir cover story for being deeply DEEPLY uncomfortable with themselves

29

u/gracesdisgrace 4h ago

Part of it is that they want a girl as a status symbol to show off to other dudes rather than for a relationship, or even sex

14

u/MissionRight9893 4h ago

This, I have a nephew who is 30 and only dates beautiful girls. He has been single for a while now and everyone tells him how many single girls there are. But he just says they’re not up to his standards. It’s sad because at this rate he’ll probably end up alone. There’s no such thing as a perfect person.

19

u/Ok_Button3151 4h ago

I have a coworker like this. She’ll go out with a guy a few times, talk about how much she likes him how he’s great etc., then she’ll stop talking to them, when me and another coworker ask why (we’re nosey), the reason is always like “oh he said he plays video games after work” or “he said he’s a cat person.” Like she genuinely really likes them as people, they’re attractive guys, good careers, and she drops them because they like video games and cats. Tinder etc. has absolutely ruined dating lol

I can see what you're saying but look at all these people getting surgeries, they're not approaching any beauty standard, they all look like distorted Picasso drawings. There's got to be something else deeper.

Like all the old ladies on Facebook that post horrible pictures with horrible makeup, it's because their eyesight is bad and they think it looks like something else.

God, I’m glad I grew up when I did. All we cared about was a cheeky drink down the park, a packet of fags and good times with our mates. Getting piercings and dyeing our hair was about the height of what we didn’t ourselves.

There is actually a secondary school in my town and outside it they have a chippy van. A lady I work with said the guy that runs it told her back when her kids were going there (her kids are my age, early 30s, all went to school In the 2000s) he used to get loads of business from the school kids but he doesn’t get as much now because the kids are all into healthy stuff. It’s good that the kids are looking to be healthier but it doesn’t actually come from a healthy place or mindset. It comes from body dysmorphia and eating disorders being glorified by twats on social media.

→ More replies (2)

59

u/Sothisismylifehuh 10h ago

Really? I would argue bodybuilding also has a large majority of people suffering from body dismorphia.

→ More replies (8)

13

u/Factorioboyio 7h ago

No, rates of body dysmorphia haven’t changed as a ratio between men and women - what has changed is access to treatments and social acceptance (particularly amongst men) who then decide yes, they can do something (drastic) about their appearance.

In other words, men previously struggling with dysmorphia didn’t feel they could do anything about it, now they do.

I would also say dysmorphia is up regardless of gender due to social media.

I’d also say that being on social media means you see more cases of it, giving the impression that it’s on the increase.

A lot of factors at play, you could write a thesis on it. But women are definitely still the most affected by quite a large margin.

7

u/Mirror_Actions 3h ago

Exactly - surgery can’t fix your vibe. He was cute before - alien after. Went out with a lot of guys when I was single. Vibes are 80% of attraction. Never liked anyone looking for approval and secretly didn’t accept themselves. It’s obvious.

Work out, get therapy and lift weights.

Body dysmorphic disorder does not have that big a difference in incidence between genders. A recent study found 16% of women and 11% of men with BDD. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11979448/

93

u/Aggressive-Map-2204 9h ago

The rate being nearly 50% higher is a significant difference.

6

u/Ok_Button3151 4h ago

I think echo chambers with more people in them because of the internet is the problem. It's making problems balloon and changing what "the norm" is for so many, body dysmorphia being one of them

4

u/DigitalUnlimited 9h ago

Yeah but in this trend it's often real world echo chambers, maybe not this guy specifically but especially among wealthy Hollywood types it's become completely normal to look like a weird alien surrounded by weird alien friends. Discussing surgeries like they talk about the weather and pointing out each other's "flaws" like still looking human in one tiny area

This is a controversial statement I’m about to make…

An awful lot of people who feel they’re in the wrong body, are too ugly, need to torture themselves for beauty, who wear way too much makeup or shop around for doctors to give them HRT and the like… a majority of these individuals would benefit much, much more if they got help in feeling comfortable in their own bodies. Sure, the obese can work to lose weight (appropriately), makeup is still okay to use, and some people will need a LOT more help than others (in various ways), but, “It’s okay to be you” and, “Learn to be happy in your own skin,” would truly put a majority of these individuals on a better path.

I don’t understand why so many people insist I’m the worst type of person who’s ever lived for saying this (since hyperbole seems to rule supreme these days), but I’m going to say if anyway and hope it’ll help at least someone.

Pro tip: He wasn’t getting rejected because of his looks.

u/GuppysBalls666 4h ago

I’m sure he’s getting rejected after as well

I miss when people just looked like people, and not like plastic versions of themselves. I know everyone is critical of their appearance, and most of us are far harsher on ourselves than we should be. But somewhere along the way, we started chasing an unrealistic idea of beauty, perfect skin, identical features, exaggerated lips, frozen expressions, and faces that look more like dolls than real human beings. The more plastic and artificial beauty becomes, the more disconnected it feels from real life. We’re all starting to look at ourselves through filters and impossible standards, forgetting that real faces have imperfections, expressions, and character. There was something beautiful about looking like a real person. I wish we could appreciate that again.

Spending thousands on plastic surgery when it's your personality that needs fixing.

8

u/geefmejegeld 11h ago

Nahh this must be fake. Right...?

7

u/Prized-Potato 10h ago

He literally needed one good haircut and to take a picture on a less stressful day. Sweet jesus. What the fuck.

7

u/Small_Ad1890 7h ago

It wasn’t his looks getting him rejected

7

u/Bring-out-le-mort 3h ago

No matter where you go, there you are-- Instead of considering his personality, attitudes, general vibe, approaches as possibly why he had women allegedly rejecting him, he leaps into major surgery as the solution. Unfortunately him looking like a villain in a comic will definitely be a killer of most relationships.

Dude doesnt know that real ones will go for your charisma rather than looks.

5

u/Street-Coffee-2026 3h ago

This! He must be an arrogant dooche who can’t figure out HOW he treats others makes the most impact.

7

u/NADVega 7h ago

If you are one of those weird asses that think he looks better AFTER,you are clearly as mentally ill as him,and you have HUGE issues. Clearly before is by far better than this horror! I would think this guy was on deaths door if i was on the same party as him.

It is not the looks of this guy that kept the girls away! I am sure they will be kept away now tho!

Looks maxxing is the the most stupid idea since voting in Trump into office.

Maybe it was the personality.

The only thing wrong before was probably his personality. He wasn’t a bad looking guy. That money would have been better spent on therapy to improve his personality and a good haircut. Instead he looks like some weird horror video game character.

5

u/Im100ThatBitch 10h ago

This isnt real. He uses filters. This is the kind of content he posts... fake looks maxxing.

7

u/Calm-Memory5965 9h ago

so.... it is his personality 😜

5

u/FremenStilgar 7h ago

At least with people that do that to their faces let you know that they are stupid without having to open their mouths.

5

u/Ho3n3r 5h ago

Ironically he's only increased his chances of rejection.

5

u/BitFiesty 3h ago

Mentally ill people shouldn’t be allowed to have procedures like this I think

5

u/Most-Selection-7203 1h ago

Dude went from looking pretty good to looking like he's on death's door. Don't think it has anything to do with how you look, dude. Think it's more of a shitty personality thing.

8

u/LuluMangs 11h ago

I think it is a good thing that he decided to have the red flags on the inside displayed on his face as well, makes it easier for us girls to avoid him

u/AnonymousAutonomous 11h ago

40k of therapy money wasted on making sure one doesnt reproduce, ever

9

u/BigFatKi6 11h ago

money well spent

Neither of these is the real guy. I’ve seen his Instagram, all of his content is an ironic take on this exact bit, he doesn’t look like either of these pictures without the filters and AI he uses, and he looks different in every post which is the dead giveaway.

How are any of you even believing this?

Not handsome squidward

5

u/BadDaddyAlger 10h ago

I'd like to know where these people always get these tens of thousands of dollars to just light on fire

5

u/Adamoism 10h ago

Dude looked fine. Like he should have rizmax, hobbymax, public speaking maxx, exposure-to-women-in-third-spaces maxx whatever. This is what single variable optimazation leads you to.

4

u/tonymacaroni9 10h ago

But like how is this an allowable thing to do to someone let alone charge them.

5

u/MSTinPA66 10h ago

Doing this to yourself should come with a waiting period and mandatory psychological evaluation.

5

u/Kingtofueater 10h ago

Pretty sure this is AI naw?

3

u/Same-Wing-8054 10h ago

Perception is reality. Change your perception before cosmetic surgery. Therapy can help.

4

u/Graygave 10h ago

Now they reject him everywhere

4

u/Larnievc 10h ago

Body dysmorphic disorder right there.

5

u/Snide_SeaLion 7h ago

This fool. I think he was actually attractive before, it was probably his personality or something

4

u/Madouc 7h ago

Now they run.

4

u/BendingBenderBends 7h ago

Looks like the clown that he is

4

u/Strange-Effort-3441 7h ago

I feel so sorry for these people, they must hate themselves something fierce for no reason.

3

u/Dratermi 7h ago

Mental illness but the doctor who went along with these surgeries should lose their license

4

u/Everything_Fine 4h ago

I don’t think his looks are why girls were rejecting him lmao

4

u/bitpartmozart13 4h ago

All of this and he will still not realize it was his personality all along.

4

u/awesomepossum6607 2h ago

He *was" a good-looking guy. He got rejected for being an asshole, and now all his red flags are on the outside.

u/simondrawer 10h ago edited 2h ago

I’m ugly AF and I bagged a hottie. Most women really don’t care much about looks. The ones that do aren’t the ones you want either.

Tbf if someone is clearly “maxxing” it’s likely because they have a terrible personality.
